Buddy punching which is sometimes also termed as Ghost Punching and also Proxy Punching is a common practice in organizations. While employees do this to fill in the attendance of their colleagues, this is an activity that negativelyEmployee Attendance Tracking impacts the profitability of the organization. This is because the organization ends up paying employees for the days they are absent just because their time clock was punched in for them by someone else.

Other than paying for the absence of employees, the organization also ends up paying the employees even if they are coming late. All this happens because of the practice of buddy punching. While it is hard for organizations to monitor this activity and stop it otherwise, employee attendance tracking has made it possible because of the automation that has been done in the systems.

Through employee attendance tracking, it has become possible to track employee timings and attendance accurately. There are different kinds of systems available for attendance tracking. These include barcode and RFID systems as well as biometric systems. While the former two are not completely fool proof because someone else can punch in the card, the biometric system works best for eliminating buddy punching. This is made possible because of the fact that biometric system uses physical features for identification purposes.

The organizations where the practice of buddy punching is prevalent are not alone in this problem because there are many organizations that do not have advanced systems for tracking time and attendance and have buddy-punching going on. Even if the organization has to invest some funds in a new biometric system, it is worth it because in the long-term, it is going to save the organization the cost of paying the extra wages because of the buddy punching.

It is not just the profitability of the organization that gets adversely affected by buddy punching, but the morale of the other employees also gets negatively affected. When employees see that other employees are getting paid even when they are not coming to work or coming in late, their morale goes down and they don’t feel like working hard at their job because they think it is not fair that those employees being absent from work are being rewarded.

In order for employees to bring out their potential and be willing to work, it is important that organizations should make sure that the systems in use are considered fair by the employees. The perception of fairness has a great impact on the quality of employees’ work.

Through automated Employee Attendance Tracking, there is more perception of fairness and the employees have greater morale and are more likely to be satisfied from their work. In addition, the time keeping is going to be accurate and impartial. Through automation in Employee Attendance Tracking, there is greater compliance of the policies as well. It is due to all these reasons and the perceived benefits of these systems that they are becoming a norm in many organizations.
