It’s an amazing feeling when your children remind you of something so important.
It’s hard to explain war and its consequences to our children but I had a big reminder this week that our children are always paying attention even when we may not realize that they are.
Our company includes people from all over the world including Ukraine and Russia. We are all so disheartened by what is happening to the Ukrainian people and looking for ways that we can help. I had shared with you that we are donating to some really great charities working hard to provide humanitarian aid to families fleeing from the war.
Much to my surprise, my daughter Rachael let me know she had money to contribute to the cause through a special project she decided to undertake all on her own. Rachael and Abby love to do crafts so they took that passion to the next level to do something in their own way to help too. I want to share with you Rachael’s project; she’s making pins of the Ukraine flag to sell and so far has donated $70 (update: Rachael is up to $400) to a friend of ours on her way to Poland to help Chef Andre and his World Central Kitchen who are feeding refugees.
That was surprising enough but when I told my team about what Rachael is doing, they responded in a big way and now are buying Rachael’s pins for themselves, their families, and others along with her other sales.
And isn’t that the perfect metaphor?! Together we can do so much. Rachael has orders for pins coming in daily! She’s doing something she loves and she’s directly able to help people on the other side of the world who need help so badly.
I’m reminded of the John Wooden quote that says, “The true test of character is what we do when no one is watching.” Rachael and Abby heard me talking about what our company was doing and decided to make a difference in a way that an 11-year-old and 8-year-old girl can, all on their own. It’s funny, we’re supposed to inspire our kids; instead, mine are inspiring me and our entire Vantagepoint family.
As we all think about the people of Ukraine and find ways to offer help in any way we can, let’s not lose sight of how we all can all make a difference in ways big and small.
May we all be grateful for how blessed we are,
